Soil Nailing / Soil Nail Walls

Soil nailing is an earth retention technique commonly used to support retaining walls, stabilize slopes, or for excavation support.

How Soil Nailing Works

In a typical soil nailing project, a soil nail is drilled into the soil strata. Soil nails are typically 4” to 6” in diameter and spaced 4’ to 6’ apart. Reinforcing material is added and a drainage system is installed. A 4-inch to 6-inch layer of shotcrete or other facing material is applied. FRS can install a decorative finish such as carving or staining the finished wall to look like stone or block. We can also install a mesh facing material that allows vegetation to grow, giving the stabilized area a natural appearance.

Applications for Soil Nailing

Soil nailing can be used to:

  • Stabilize slopes
  • Prevent landslides
  • Steepen an existing slope
  • Provide earth retention for excavations
  • Repair retaining walls

Soil Nailing Design

Foundation Repair Services will conduct a preliminary analysis of your site and begin design of the soil nail wall. The soil nail wall design will consider wall layout, vertical and horizontal spacing of soil nails, nail length, nail inclination, and soil nail material. We’ll also factor in the condition of the soil.

Our experience drilling soil nail walls in North Carolina, South Carolina and throughout the Southeast gives us an advantage in maximizing stability and structural integrity. We’re highly knowledgeable about local soils and slope conditions, which means we’re uniquely qualified to design and install a soil nail wall that’s optimal for your site.
